School board splits 3-2 to tap Maplesville coach for Tigers

Maplesville High School head football coach Brent Hubbert was expected in Brewton yesterday following a special meeting of the Brewton City School Board Tuesday afternoon where Hubbert was named the new head football coach and athletic director at T.R. Miller High School.
The board approved Superintendent Kenneth Varner's recommendation to hire Hubbert on a 3-2 vote. Board members Bart Till, Ann Peach and Mark Manning voted yes. Members Regina Watson and Sybil Brundidge voted no.
Till thanked the large crowd that showed up for the special meeting to hire the new football coach.
"It has not been easy the past few weeks," Till said. "This decision was not taken lightly."
Till noted he was a graduate and former athlete at T.R. Miller.
He said the decision to hire Hubbert was based on information the administration supplied the school board.
"I did my own investigation and Coach Hubbert's name came to the top," Till added. "Everybody won't be happy with the decision but I ask that we all come together and support Coach Hubbert."
"It's gotten ugly at times," Till added. "Give this guy a chance and mainly do it for the kids. We want what's best for our community."
Hubbert, 49, has spent the past 15 years at Maplesville as a physical education teacher, athletic director, head football coach, strength and conditioning coach and B-team basketball coach.
He compiled a 166-26 record as Maplesville football coach winning the Class 1A championship in 2014, 2015 and 2016. His 2013 team made it to the championship game and the Red Devils made the playoffs 15 straight years under Hubbert.
He began his coaching career at Wacoochee Jr. High School where he served as a physical education teacher, basketball coach and head football coach for 1994 and 1995.
He was the freshman football coach at Smith Station Intermediate School in 1995-1996 and served as the defensive coordinator at Jemison High School from 1996-2000.
He compiled a 17-15 record as Jemison's head football coach from 2000 to 2003 before he took over as the head coach at Maplesville.
His overall coaching record is 183-41 with 10 regional championships.
Hubbert was the offensive coordinator for the North-South AHSAA All-Star football game in 2007, head coach in the North-South AHSAA All-Star game in 2011 and named the 1A Coach of the Year by the Alabama Football Coaches Association.
