Law Day gives seniors experience

Theme is ‘Free speech, free press free society’; Marshall to speak

This Thursday and Friday, May 2 and May 3, seniors from seven area high schools will witness first hand the U. S. justice system in action as Escambia County (Ala.) hosts Law Day to be held in the courthouse in Brewton.

Atmore Christian School, Escambia Academy and Escambia County High School will serve as jurors and courtroom witnesses Thursday to hear and decide on the outcome of a case.

Then Friday, Cornerstone, Flomaton High School, T.R. Miller High School and W.S. Neal High Schools will participate in the same way.

Circuit Judge Dave Jordan will oversee the court proceedings Thursday and Circuit Judge Jeff White will serve on Friday. Students will get the opportunity to meet the judges, attorneys, law enforcement, courthouse administration and many others who are a part of the legal system in their county.

This year's theme is 'Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society'. Thursday's guest speaker will be Sam Irby and Friday's guest speaker will be Alabama Attorney General Steven T. Marshall.

As with all court proceedings, the jury and students in the audience will hear both prosecuting and defending attorneys for the case before jurors deliberate and deliver a verdict. The defendants in these cases have agreed to allow the students' verdicts to stand.
