Over a two day period last week, Flomaton scored 17 runs on 17 hits to sweep St. Michael Catholic to wrap up its runner-up position in post-season play and will begin the playoffs at 3 p.m. at T.R. Miller.
Flomaton defeated St. Michael 5-0 last Thursday at Fairhope and then defeated the Warriors 12-2 Friday to sweep the series. The tie-breaking game scheduled for Friday was cancelled.
Flomaton will travel to Miller Friday for a best-of-three series with the first game scheduled for 3 p.m. The second game will be held about 30 minutes at the conclusion of that game. If the two teams split the third game will be played at noon on Saturday.
Flomaton head coach Wes Sessions said he likes the position his Hurricanes are in heading into the post season.
“Obviously we wanted to win the area but we are in the playoffs,” Sessions said. “Our goal was not to peak too early and we've been playing better the past few weeks. We're playing defense better and hitting the ball better.”
Sessions said he feels the team has improved during the year, which is a key.
“The kids have a lot of confidence,” Sessions said. “The name of the game is to throw strikes and play defense and we've been doing that lately.”
In the two-game series with St. Michael, the Hurricanes only committed two errors.
FHS 5, St. Michael 0
Evan Tatum held St. Michael to no runs on four hits and struck out five to lead the Hurricanes to a 5-0 win in the opening game of the area match-up last Thursday in Fairhope.
With the game tied 0-0 heading into the top of the third, Will Rollin led off the inning with a single and moved to second on Alex Cash's single. Rollin later scored on a ground out by Sam Smith.
Flomaton broke the game open in the top of fifth with four runs.
Rollin reached on an error and a fielder's choice by Alex Cash left two runners on. Sam Smith then reached on a fielder's choice and two runners scored. Joseph O'Bannon then delivered a two-RBI single to give Flomaton the 5-0 lead.
Tatum then slammed the door allowing only one hit over the final two innings for the victory that sealed Flomaton's runner-up finish in the area.
Flomaton had six hits in the game with Cash and O'Bannon each having two hits. Jackson Steele and Rollin also had hits for the Canes.
FHS 12, St. Michael 2
Flomaton was holding a 4-2 lead over St. Michael Friday heading into the bottom of the fifth before the Hurricanes erupted for seven runs to blow the game open in route to a 12-2 victory to wrap up the regular season.
Flomaton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Cash led off the inning with a triple and scored on Steele's RBI single.
St. Michael took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on two hits.
The Hurricanes bounced back in the bottom of the third with three runs to take a 4-2 lead. Tucker Davenport led off the inning with a single. Steele singled and Sam Smith doubled. Cruz Odom had a double to help push the runs across the plate.
Four hits, two walks, a hit batter and an error opened the flood gates for Flomaton in the bottom of the fifth when the Hurricanes scored seven runs to take take an 11-2 lead.
Cash, Steele, Evan Tatum, Nick Turner and Davenport all had hits in the inning.
Flomaton added another run in the bottom of the sixth for the victory.
Cash, Steele and Davenport each had three hits to lead the Flomaton offense. Smith, Tatum, Odom and Turner also had hits for the Canes.
Odom got the win for the Hurricanes allowing two runs on four hits and striking out two in six innings of work.
