Bayside wins in three game series; Flomaton looks to win against St. Michael's

Flomaton High School's chance of winning the area title and hosting an opening round playoff game took a hit Friday night in the rubber game of a three-game series against Bayside Academy with the Admirals winning the nightcap of a double header 6-3.

Flomaton's playoff hopes now ride on an April 11 and April 12 series with St. Michael's.

This past Thursday, Flomaton lost to Bayside 2-1 in eight innings at Bayside. The Hurricanes bounced back to defeat the Admirals 12-4 in the opening game Friday in Flomaton. Then in the tiebreaker game, Bayside defeated the Canes 6-3.

Although Flomaton and Bayside both have 1-1 area records, Bayside holds the tiebreaker due to the final win.

Bayside 2, FHS 1

Flomaton and Bayside both scored single runs in the first inning before setting into a pitcher's duel that ended when the Admirals scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to claim the victory.

Alex Cash led off the game with a single and stole second and third before scoring on an error. Evan Tatum and Cruz Odom each had singles in the first inning but were left stranded.

Bayside followed the same path in the bottom of the first when Gibbs singled, stole second and third and scored on an error to tie the game at 1-1.

Bayside captured the win in the bottom of the eighth when King singled with one out and later scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Rucando.

On the day, Flomaton scored one run on seven hits and committed one error. Bayside scored two runs on six hits and committed two errors.

Steele took the loss for the Hurricanes in seven and two-thirds innings of work allowing two runs on six hits, striking out eight and walking none.

Lee got the win for Bayside allowing no runs on no hits in two-thirds of an inning work in relief of Corte.

Sam Smith had two hits to lead Flomaton. Cash, Tatum and Joseph O'Bannon had hits for the Hurricanes.

FHS 12, Bayside 4

Flomaton came out swinging in the first game of the double header Friday, jumping to an 8-0 lead and going on to claim the 11-6 victory.

In the bottom of the first, Steele doubled and Smith singled before Tatum delivered a two RBI single to give Flomaton the early 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Cash singled and later scored. In the third Odom hit a solo homerun to give Flomaton a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Steele and Smith opened the inning with walks and advanced on a fielder's choice hit by Tatum. Walks to Chance James and Nick Turner and singles by Jay Jackson and Will Rolin pushed four runs across the plate for an 8-0 lead.

Three Flomaton errors and two Bayside hits in the top of the fifth pushed three runs across for the Admirals to cut the lead to 8-3. But Flomaton responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Cash led off with a single and Steele reached on an error. Smith walked, Tatum reached on a fielder's choice and James doubled. Turner walked and O'Bannon singled.

Bayside added a single run in the top of the sixth and Flomaton went on to claim the 12-4 win.

Flomaton scored its 12 runs on 11 hits and committed four errors.

Cash had three hits to lead the Hurricanes, Odom had two hits and three RBI and Steele, Smith, Tatum, O'Bannon, Jackson and Will Rollin each had hits.

Tatum got the win for Flomaton allowing four unearned runs on six hits and striking out five in seven innings of work.

Bayside 6, FHS 3

After three scoreless innings in the nightcap, Bayside struck first with four runs in the top of the fouryh by going small ball with three consecutive bunts and a single to take the early lead.

Flomaton cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth when Carnley reached on an error and Odom hit a homerun.

But Bayside capitalized on two Flomaton errors in the top of the fifth to score two runs to make the score 6-2 Admirals.

Flomaton added one run in the bottom of the seventh to make the final 6-3.

O'Bannon took the loss for the Hurricanes allowing six runs (one earned) on five hits in six innings of work.

On the night, Flomaton scored its three runs on five hits and committed three errors.

The big hit came on Odom's homerun in the fourth. Cash, Smith, Tatum and Tucker Davenport also had hits for the Hurricanes.
