Firefighters find dog at house fire

Pet found alive hiding under a bed inside burning residence

A Flomaton area family who thought they'd lost everything in a fire that engulfed their home cried tears of joy when they learned firemen had rescued their dog, Indie, found hiding under a bed in the home.

The Flomaton Fire Department responded to a call around 3:20 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, about a fully-involved structure fire at 4500 Old Foshee Road in Flomaton.

Homeowners Glen and Nita Brown were on the way out of town and had left, so the house was vacant. They received a call that their house was on fire, so as they turned around and headed back to their residence, their daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Shane White, arrived at the residence.

According to Flomaton Fire Chief Steve Stanton, the fire started in the carport around the vehicle and quickly spread to the main house. The blaze took about 20 minutes to contain he said.

"When we arrived on scene, the family told us there possibly a dog in the house," said Stanton. "We saw a dog in the yard and figured that was it and it was ok, but found out later there was another dog inside the house. The dog did get out and it was fine."

Lambeth, Pineview, Arnold Crossroads, Century, McCall Fire Departments all assisted with containing the blaze. Escambia County Sheriff's Department and Med 16 EMS were also on scene.

The family has hired a cleaning company out of Brewton to clean the house, and has plans to move back in Monday.
