Atmore man faces felony gun charge

An Atmore man who is a convicted felon since 2008 now faces a felony weapon possession charge last Monday when a traffic stop and subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a gun on the front seat.

Antwon Demond Bowens, 36, 104 Gray St., was driving east on Highway 4 in Century with no headlights and was stopped by law enforcement, according to an Escambia County Sheriff's Office report.

The report said law enforcement made contact with Bowens at the intersection of Century Boulevard and Front Street, where it was discovered his driver's license had been revoked due to an DUI in December 2018 and the vehicle's tag was from another vehicle belonging to his girlfriend.

Bowens told a sheriff's deputy the .380 caliber Ruger LCP found on the front seat of the vehicle belonged to his girlfriend. When the deputy ran the weapon, it came back with negative results, the report said.

The deputy had dispatch run a criminal history on Bowens learned he was a convicted felon in June 2008 for carrying a pistol concealed without a permit and for domestic violence. Bowens was arrested and transported to Escambia County Jail.

Bowens was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and several other misdemeanors and given a total bond of $7,000, according to the report.
