Circuit clerk's office reopens

The Escambia County (Ala.) Circuit Clerk's office was reopened to the public last Thursday after being closed for three days for renovations that included the installation of new furniture and fixtures, including a new counter.

Circuit Clerk John Robert Fountain said the equipment in that office had been in place since the courthouse was opened in Brewton about 60 years ago. Fountain said earlier this week that only two of the telephone lines are working but said that problem should be corrected before the end of the week.

In addition to the furniture, Fountain also said new computer equipment was added.

“It was long overdue,” Fountain said. “I apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused the public. We haven't had any new furnishings since the courthouse was built and it was outdated and needed an upgrade.”

Fountain added that by moving the work stations to the new front counter it allowed the office to utilize less space and open the office up.

“It will make the office more efficient,” Fountain added.

County Clerk-Administrator Tony Sanks said work will resume next week the repair parts of the ceiling in several offices and the hallways throughout the courthouse. The problems were created by a combination of leaking pipes and a leaking roof.

Sanks noted the work will be done after hours with crews working 10-hour shifts beginning at 5 p.m. He said the courthouse will remain in full operation during normal business hours.
