Century wins game; sets fish fry

The Century Heat youth basketball team is gearing up for a fish fry from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Friday, Jan. 18, at Nadine McCaw Park in Century to raise money for equipment following Tuesday's win against the Atmore Pelicans with a final score of 9 to 6, in Atmore. Plates are $10 and come with fish, potato salad, baked beans, cake, soda and bread. Donations are also welcome and to order multiple plates to be picked up, contact 571-258-7231.

The Century Heat players, ages 8 to 10, Jakel Phifer, Milkavion White, Keyanta Ewing, Marquise Banks and TyCoren Burt, showed up and played a good game against Atmore.

“I was really proud of the way our team played, and the players,” said Coach Anthony Robinson. “Everybody as a team contributed. The kids just really enjoyed the game and working hard, making effort and strides.”

Robinson has been coaching basketball for about 12 years, and came back to Century two years ago, to find there was no basketball team, although they were other sports offered.

“There was no program here in Century, so that's why we initiated the program,” said Robinson. “I really think this fulfills for kids life lessons of what we do and how we do it. We train, I tell the kids if they come out here and work hard, whatever they put in it, they will get out of it. They train and work hard every day. Now we have a basketball program here in Century too, I think that is going to occupy them in Century year-round.”

Robinson said whether it's the school, for education, athletics, he thinks they will do well if they work hard and although this program is inaugural here in Century, we hope to include other age groups as well in the future.

Anyone interested in participating in youth basketball, contact Robinson at 571-258-7231.
