Smith elected to Century seat

Boutwell keeps seat; Smith wins over Hudson; amendments pass

The Century Council will welcome a new face after the election Tuesday resulted in Incumbent Ben Boutwell keeping his seat 3 against challenger Amanuel Onell Dubose, while candidate James Smith took the majority votes against candidate Mary Hudson for Councilman Gary Riley's council seat 4.

Of the 498 total votes, Dubose received 195 votes, or 39.16 percent, while Boutwell got 303 votes, or 60.84 percent.

Candidates James Smith, Jr. got 277, or 54.64 percent of the 507 total votes while contender Mary Hudson got 230, or 45.36 percent of the votes.

Both terms will begin January 2019 and end January 2022.

“People cast their votes and said what they wanted,” said Century Mayor Henry Hawkins. “The people's will won. I hope the two new council members come in with the town's best interest at heart and not with their own agendas.”

All of the amendments on the ballot passed.
