Jay student killed in Thursday crash

First grader dies; three others are injured

A single-vehicle crash at 3:12 p.m. last Thursday, Oct. 18, has claimed the life of a Jay Elementary School student and injured three others.

Six-year-old Kirstianna Boutwell was killed when the 2015 Chevrolet Equinox she was a passenger in left the roadway and struck a tree. She was pronounced dead on the scene. Boutwell was a first grader at Jay Elementary School.

The driver, Delaney Hammac, 18, of Panama City, was injured and transported to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, where she underwent surgery and expects a full recovery. Two other children were transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola and are expected to fully recover.

The crash occurred on Jay Road, seven miles southwest of Brewton.

Investigators believe speed will be a factor in the crash. All passengers and the driver were wearing seat belts. Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate the crash.
