Pollard gets grant for nature trail

Pollard-McCall Jr. High School has received a $12,000 grant from the Gulf Coast Resource Conservation and Development Council (R,C, and D) to renovate both the Sarah Finlay Science Center and Nature Trail that were initially installed on their campus with grants from The Finlay Foundation and The Gulf Coast R, C and D.

Over the years the installations have become run down and are currently is a state of disrepair. Kevin Knowles, our new 4th through 8th grade science teacher has integrated these two areas into his curriculum. Knowles has already spent two Saturdays with his students working on restoring these areas.

Students and staff at Pollard McCall would like to thank RC and D and all those who helped make this grant possible including State Sen. Greg Albritton, State Rep. Alan Baker, and Escambia County (Ala.) Commissioner Larry White all had a hand in making this possible.

Students at Pollard are excited about this new venture and have many projects planned for this area including growing hydroponic vegetables, flowers, etc. in the greenhouse and exploring the many different varieties of plant life along the nature trail.
