Irrational intransigence makes debate futile

The intensely acrimonious Kavanaugh Supreme Court confirmation aggravated and frustrated the nation with for weeks. Appalled at the vicious last minute smear of a good man, most Americans were stunned when the allegations could not be corroborated and even found to be largely false, leftists still insisted Brett Kavanaugh was a serial rapist! Committed to the fraud, they took to the streets and elevators to intimidate Republicans and protest the incredible misogynist injustice of not believing their hollow allegations.

While this pathetic episode slinks into history, it has done grave damage to our system of governance and exposed an irreconcilable rift in our body politic. Ardent leftists in media and politics would have you believe the disagreement is that Republicans do not care about women or a rotten character and that they will excuse a sexual predator to get their man on the Supreme Court. But typical of leftist fare, that is a wholly false premise.

The real schism in American politics is that truth and fairness no longer matter, and that the ends justify any means no matter how heinous. Democrats knew Christine Ford’s flimsy allegations would never stand up to scrutiny. That’s why they threw that slime ball after the final inning hoping the ensuing salacious circus would delay and possibly derail Kavanaugh’s appointment by sheer over emotionalized Jerry Springer theater.

The party of Ted Kennedy, Bill Clinton, and Keith Ellison does not care about sexual misconduct or college boozing; they don’t really care about Kavanaugh’s supposed guilt or even Ford’s alleged suffering. They only care about stopping a Supreme Court appointment until after the midterms.

Democrats’ desire to halt Kavanaugh is understandable; it’s politics. They could have simply said we don’t want another conservative on the Court. Realizing they could not delay the confirmation through the legitimate process, they were willing to break any rules and even resort to callous character assassination. So they tried to win at any cost. Senator Spartacus Booker clearly stated guilt or innocence was irrelevant. Kavanaugh was unacceptable and they would find some way to stop him. Hearings and FBI investigations simply did not matter.

This fiasco finally ended with Justice Kavanaugh’s confirmation and we should move on, but we can’t because truth was a casualty. The intractable problem is we cannot agree on truth, so how can we cooperate on anything? Both parties engage in brutal politics, but this impasse was a new low. Not a new tactic, rabid leftists are trying to enforce a tyranny of speech and thought. Whatever the left says is true and whatever the right says is false. Believe global warming is real or you are dissident to be jailed. Accept homosexual marriage as moral or you are hateful bigot. Accept abortion or you are a misogynist.

There are two particularly insidious aspects to this stark Saul Alinsky approach. First, debate is futile and compromise impossible. Just a few weeks ago, Justice Kavanaugh had an impeccable reputation, but leftist operatives for purely partisan purposes conjured all manner of allegations from drinking beer and throwing ice to sexual assault and even gang rape. Most of these scurrilous rumors were baseless and even when they were debunked because NO ONE could find or provide corroboration, the Democrat base is still repeating them as gospel. And they go even further to insist this is proof Republicans hate women.

This irrational intransigence to due process, common standards of proof, innocent until proven guilty, and just the simple truth feeds the second serious danger; leftists are demonizing anyone they disagree with as inhumane, unjust, and just pure evil. This is not hardball politics; this is a blatant attempt to discredit our system of governance and foment violence. If one truly believes the system is hopelessly corrupt or failed and it inflicts gross injustice or even harm to its citizens, then resistance by any means could be justified.

That is exactly what we are seeing with screaming protesters and leftist activists harassing Republicans where ever they find them; and we have already witnessed violence when a crazed Bernie Sanders socialist tried to assassinate Republican Congressmen practicing softball. Engaging a very dangerous game, Democrats have made it known that they will not accept ANYTHING from Republicans, even truth; and they will use any means to implement their agenda, even destroying the republic. If they fail to retake the House in November, stand by for even more more violent demonstrations.

It’s time for cooler heads to prevail and hopefully Maine Senator Susan Collins provided much needed reason and perspective. Not beloved by Democrats and a constant source of irritation to Republicans with her less than conservative votes, she offered decency and fairness to all. By their very nature, moderates seldom have a lasting impact on politics, but Senator Collins may have provided the only lesson in civility and moderation that could bring a polarized country back from the brink.
