Help fight hunger by donating

We don't know Na'Keetric Devonte Davison. What we know is the 26-year old homeless man is in the Escambia County Detention Center on multiple charges following a break-in at the Flomaton First Baptist Church Daycare in Flomaton and a building next door.

What we do know is he bypassed electronic equipment and other items that could have possibly been sold for cash, but he chose food. Granted, Davison is innocent until proven guilty but if this young man was hungry there were many ways to get food other than stealing. Our bet is if he had knocked on the front door of the church, or any other church, he would have been provided something to eat.

When we first ran the story a week ago about someone breaking into the daycare center and stealing food, we thought that was a desperate attempt by someone.

The Flomaton Police Department did its job. Inv. Chance Thompson gathered evidence at the scene that led to Davison as the suspect. As he should, Davison was arrested and charged.

Sometimes we all live in our Ivory Towers and don't see real problems that somehow fall between the cracks. We talked to police officers and church members, they would have been glad to give Davison some food if he had only asked.

We are about to enter the holiday season when people are more willing to make donations to churches and food banks. That's all well and good. But people also get hungry in July, September and October.

Most churches either have a food bank or they know where one is close by. As you ponder where you want to give money this holiday season, look there.

Will there be abuse? Of course. Will you help put food into the bellies of a family who really needs it? Yes you will.
