Johnson Ford in Atmore and Peach Chevrolet in Brewton were awarded bids Monday for the purchase of two new vehicles for the sheriff's office.
Johnson Ford submitted the low bid of $30,000 for a truck and Peach submitted the low bid of $35,876.52 on a Tahoe.
In other business Monday, the commission:
- Passed a resolution agreeing to keep its workers' compensation insurance with the Association of County Commissions of Alabama' workers compensation fund for an additional three years.
County Clerk-Administrator Tony Sanks told commissioners that by passing the resolution the commission would get a one-time 15 percent discount which would save the county $26,400.
- Heard from Commissioner Brandon Smith, who wants to lower the speed limit on Cow Pen Creek Road in front of Escambia Academy during school hours.
Smith said the current speed limit is 25 mph, but nobody drives 25 mph. He said it's dangerous because the school has buildings on both sides of the road and students have to cross the road.
Smith said he wanted to bring it to the commission to give the public an opportunity to voice their opinion on the matter. He did not name a speed limit he would like to see posted. He also said he would discuss the issue with Hugh Fountain, the school's headmaster.
