Canes defeat Chiefs in rivalry game

Flomaton and Northview renewed their football rivalry Friday night in a game fans from both sides would like to see continue as the Hurricanes traveled to Bratt and left with a 41-20 win over the Chiefs in a game that saw 16 penalties for a total of 178 yards against both teams.

Flomaton (2-0) will be off this week while Northview (1-1) will play host to South Walton in a 7 p.m. kickoff.

"It was a big win for our team," said Flomaton head coach Doug Vickery. "We've played rivalry games back to back in Jay and Northview and sometimes you get concerned with your kids letting the emotions get in the way of playing good football."

Northview received the opening kickoff and began at its own 25, but a personal foul sent the Chief's backwards and they were forced to punt.

Flomaton's Daquan Johnson returned the punt to the Northview 38-yard line, where the Hurricanes set up for their first possession.

A facemask penalty against the Chiefs moved the ball to the 25 and an offsides penalty against Northview moved the ball up 5 yards.

With Johnson under center, he quickly hit Da'Shun Odom on a pass to give Flomaton a first and goal at the 6-yard line. Johnson then ran it in from there. A two-point attempt failed, but with 8:01 left in the first quarter, Flomaton led 6-0.

Another holding penalty against Northview on the kickoff had the Chiefs begin their second drive from their own 18-yard line.

Behind quarterback Seth Killam, Northview picked up a first down at the 30 and converted a fourth-and-inches play to pick up a first down at their own 40-yard line.

Northview moved to the 47 before Aunterio Minor broke free off tackle for a 53-yard touchdown run. Killam added the PAT and with 4:11 left in the first quarter, Northview led 7-6.

Flomaton took over at its own 20 but was flagged for holding on first down and found itself in a first and 20 situation from the Northview 10-yard line.

Johnson was able to hit Quincie McCall on a big pass play that gave the Hurricanes a first down at their own 42-yard line.

Flomaton moved into Northview territory with a first down at the 33 as the first quarter came to a close with Northview leading 7-6.

Johnson was able to scramble out of the backfield to pick up a first down to the Northview 15-yard line. Off-setting penalties then put the Hurricanes into a third and 12 at the Northview 35-yard line.

With Odom under center at quarterback, he ran to about the 24-yard line to set up a fourth and 1 with 10:49 left in the first quarter and he stayed behind center to pick up a first down at the 20.

Facing a third and 10, McCall hauled in a pass for a first down at the Northview 8-yard line.

With Johnson back at quarterback, he walked into the end zone untouched from 2-yards out. Another two-point attempt failed, but with 7:42 left in the first half, Flomaton had regained the lead at 12-7.

Northview went three and out on its next possession and was forced to punt. A good return by the Hurricanes was negated by an illegal block and Flomaton took over at its own 32-yard line.

Facing a third and 11, Flomaton went with the draw and Devonta Bradley picked up the first down at the 50-yard line.

Johnson then kept the football for a first down at the Northview 33-yard line. After moving to just outside the 24-yard line, Johnson took off again and found the end zone.

Johnson then hit Odom on a two-point try and with 2:41 left in the first half, Flomaton led 20-7.

Northview was forced into a three-and-out on its next possession and Flomaton was unable to get into scoring position as the first half ended with Flomaton leading 20-7.

Northview came out in the second half and Killam hit Adam Aliff on an 84-yard touchdown pass. The PAT kick failed, but the Chiefs had cut the Flomaton lead to within a touchdown at 20-13 with 7:18 left in the third quarter.

Flomaton answered on a 54-yard touchdown run by Odom and Odom carried the two-point try into the end zone to increase the Hurricanes' lead to 28-13 with 2:55 left in the third, which stood as the quarter came to a close.

With 7:26 left in the fourth quarter, Johnson hit McCall on a 41-yard touchdown pass. A two-point pass play failed, but Flomaton had increased its lead to 34-13.

Northview answered the score when Killam hit Trent Kite on a 10-yard touchdown pass. Killam added the PAT and with 4:53, Northview trailed Flomaton 34-20.

Flomaton put the nail in the coffin with 1:30 left in the game when Johnson scored on a 17-yard run, followed by Odom's kick to make the final score 41-20.

"I was pleased with the way we played in sloppy conditions," Vickery said. "I thought we played well offensively and defensively."

Vickery credited his coaching staff for making adjustments at the half that allowed the Flomaton offense to pick up big chunks of yardage running off tackle.

"We knew we had our work cut out for us entering this game," Vickery said. "Northview has a good football team. Their quarterback is very athletic, he can run the ball and he throws the ball well. They also have a good offensive line. They do a good job with misdirection that gave us problems at time."

Unofficial stats showed Flomaton rushing 39 times for 303 yards with Johnson picking up 243 yards on 26 carries.

Johnson completed three of seven passes for 71 yards for a total offensive effort of 364 yards for the Hurricanes.

Northview rushed 25 times for 168 yards with Jaheem Durant picking up 47 yards on 13 carries.

Killam completed five of nine passes in the second half for 120 yards to give Northview a total offensive effort of 288 yards.

Flomaton was penalized 10 times for 100 yards and the Chiefs were flagged six times for 78 yards.
