Godwin named as Century town clerk

The Century Town Council voted unanimously to approve Interim Town Clerk Kim Godwin as the official town clerk at its meeting Monday, May 7. Councilwoman Ann Brooks was not present.

Godwin began working for the town six years ago, leaving to work for Century Correctional Institute for several months. She returned to the town of Century in 2016 and worked as citizens services clerk, then senior citizens clerk.

"Not long after I started working for the town at the window, I expressed interest in attending clerk's academy," said Godwin. "I have attended for three years and will continue that education."

Godwin said next she worked as IT (information technology) Technical Manager before she left to work at the prison as a secretarial specialist for the colonel.

"I worked long and hard to get here," said Godwin. "I feel like I have earned this position."

When she returned in 2016, she was deputy clerk of utilities and eventually gas superintendent.

When former Town Clerk Leslie Howington resigned March 9, Godwin agreed to serve as interim, keeping her options open.

"The position of town clerk seems a little more in line with my skill set, so the decision wasn't hard to make when the opportunity presented itself," said Godwin. "It's a good challenge, a career move. I'm here to stay. All of us together make a strong team, we all work well together."

Godwin is a member of the Florida Association of City Clerks (FACC), which affords her the chance to ask many certified clerks any question that helps her perform her job well.

"It's reassuring to know that I can access years of experience through my fellow city clerks when I need help," said Godwin. "I look forward to helping the town of Century, the mayor and the council make decisions and carry out the business of government properly."

"She is doing n excellent job," said Century Mayor Henry Hawkins. "According to our guidelines, if someone is qualified, we can promote from within."

In a motion made by Councilman Ben Boutwell and seconded by Councilwoman Sandra McMurray Jackson, the council voted and the motion carried.
