  • Daizee left one last lesson, buckle up

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Dec 28, 2017

I didn't know Daizee Angus. She wasn't somebody that grew up with my children who I got to know. I went to the wreck Friday night on County Road 4A and learned someone had been killed. I heard about the horrific details of the fatality. At that time Friday night I didn't know whether it was a teenager or old man who had been killed, but I felt for the family who had to deal with such a tragedy right before Christmas. It was later that night that Daizee's name began circulating through social...

  • A Tax cut for Christmas

    Bradley Byrne, Guest Columnist|Dec 28, 2017

This Christmas, the American people received a gift that isn’t found underneath the tree but will be found in your pocketbook and paychecks over the coming years. I’m talking about passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act represents the first major overhaul of our nation’s tax code since 1986. The ultimate goal is to grow the American economy and put more money in your pockets. I firmly believe the money is better off in the hands of the American people instead of in the coffers of a bloated federal government. Consi...

  • Political icons lost during 2017

    Steve Flowers, Guest Columnist|Dec 28, 2017

At the close of each year, my tradition is to acknowledge the passing away of significant political leaders from the political stage in our beloved state. We lost some icons this year. As I sit in my office writing this yearend column, pictures of two of my favorite friends and legends adorn my walls. The photos of Governor Albert Brewer and Congressman Jim Martin look down at me. Both were Christian gentlemen. Governor Brewer passed away last January in Birmingham. He was 88. We had visited over lunch only a few months earlier. Brewer grew up...

  • A great year for making America great again

    Pete Riehm, Guest Columnist|Dec 28, 2017

According to the main stream media, the past year has been a tumultuous trouncing of Trump at every turn. Breathlessly trying to perform last rites on the Trump presidency since election night, they and Democrats warned of endless racist violence, stock market crash, economic collapse, and international defeat around the globe. And Trump would be impeached, jailed, and exiled to Guantanamo Bay Cuba for colluding with the Russians to steal the American throne from its rightful heir, Queen Hillary. Any sober review of 2017 wrecks the propaganda r...
