At Monday night's meeting, Century Mayor Henry Hawkins gave each council member a copy of a letter and check issued to the Town of Century in the amount of $1,751.70, a repayment of money he spent for potential economic development in October 2018. At an earlier council meeting, Councilwoman Ann Brooks had questioned several charges on the town's bill list made on Oct. 23, including Expedia charges for $107.58 and $560.92, a Frontier airfare of $214.90, a Delta air charge of $366.90, and an...

    Gretchen McPherson, Ledger Staff|Apr 4, 2019

An early morning crash in Baldwin County has claimed the lives of a Century man and Atmore man and left three others hospitalized. Shortly after 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, Alabama State Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Baldwin 87 near Cowpen Creek Road in the Elsanor community. Steve A. Leonard, 57, of Atmore, was driving south on Baldwin 87 when his 2009 Dodge Ram collided head-on with a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado. Leonard was transported to University Hospital in Mobile where he...

  • Accurate meters raise bill

    Gretchen McPherson, Ledger Staff|Apr 4, 2019

At Monday night's meeting, Jay council members discussed the influx of calls from Jay residents who are requesting a recheck of their water meter following a rate increase according to Jay Operations Manager, Eric Seib. Seib said that they have received 10 to 12 customer calls per week asking for a water meter recheck. He said it's the accuracy of the new meters versus the old ones, which allowed some water to slip by, and what used to read 2,000 to 3,000 gallons is now reading 5,000 to 6,000...

She said with all her family members dead she really had no where she needed to be and decided to take off. She's been through Pennsylvania, Texas and the panhandle of Florida. "I didn't have anywhere I needed to be and I decided I wanted to travel around and visit the country," she said. She was in...

  • Lack of trust can be settled election day

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Apr 4, 2019

I seriously doubt the fact that Century Mayor Henry Hawkins repaid the town of Century $1,751 for airline tickets will simply solve the issue. But I think it's a start. But I have a problem with Hawkins using his own money to pay for those tickets if those tickets were on the up-and-up for economic development. I'm all for transparency in government. The people who pay the taxes to operate government need to be able to see their entire process and access public records. We don't want...

  • Hat's off to Brazile and all our cops

    Our View|Apr 4, 2019

Too often we don't appreciate the job our police officers, sheriff deputies, highway patrolmen and others do to keep us safe. We simply see them as people driving a patrol car and carrying a weapon and a badge. Law enforcement officers go through extensive training at the police academy to get certified. They then continue extensive continuing education and classes and training throughout their career. Being a cop 30 or 40 years ago compared to being a cop today are like night and day. Last week we sat down with East Brewton Police Chief Kenny...
