  • Temple ceases operation

    On Tuesday, Georgia-Pacific officials told employees at Temple, a particle board plant in Monroeville, that the company’s composite panels segment will cease production operations in 60 to 90 days. Temple currently has 95 employees. GP also announced it will shut down the Hope Particle Board Plant in Hope, Arkansas in 60 to 90 days, and the company has decided not to rebuild its particle board plant in Thomson, Ga., which was severely damaged by fire recently.     After a brief executive session during the South Alabama Gas (SAG) District’s March board meeting Tuesday night in Evergreen, the board voted to form Gulf States Gas District (GSGD) along with the cities of Evergreen and Brewton. Mark Burgess, SAG’s chief executive officer, said the new entity will solely be used to purchase large amounts of natural gas through a prepay program.     South Alabama Gas (SAG) District’s board of directors unanimously agreed to allow the company to distribute $450,000 of the surplus revenue it has retained from previous years to its member cities and towns.     Thompson Gas of Boonsboro, MD purchased most of South Alabama Gas District’s (SAG’s) propane division’s assets last week for $17.6 million. Officials of Thompson and SAG met at SAG’s corporate office last Thursday morning to sign the contracts, according to SAG’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mark Burgess. “We retained six pieces of property with an estimated value of approximately $1.1 million with approximately $180,000 in inventory,” said Burgess.
