Bourdain's death will not be forgotten

Last Friday, suicide claimed the life of another victim, Anthony Bourdain. Bourdain initially made his claim to fame because of his culinary skills before eventually merging his talents of journalism and cooking, when he became the host on the CNN hit television show “Parts Unknown”.

Bourdain broke down boundaries and shocked television executives and audiences alike, by his ability to travel throughout a multitude of cultures interviewing people while sampling local cuisine in either restaurants or in the more intimate settings of people’s homes. Throughout his interviews a similar pattern started to develop in Bourdain’s interviewing style and cultural divides began to disappear as the food and various beverages made Bourdain’s hosts and guests visibly relax on screen. By his very easy going nature, people would release their inhibitions and the common thread of Bourdain’s show proved that across the globe the human condition was essentially the same.

Bourdain tried to show us that we shouldn’t focus on the differences that drives us apart, but on the very things that make us human and draws us together.

As the world morns the loss of this rare soul, so tragically taken by suicide, we need to remember the lessons he taught us. Reach out to our neighbors. Check in on a friend that you haven’t spoken to in a while. Smile at a stranger. If we all work together to realize how much alike we all are, then maybe one by one we won’t feel so alone and suicide will no longer take the lives of our friends, relatives, peers and idols. Rest In Peace, Anthony, your lessons will live on for generations.
