Don't miss electronic recycling

Our guess is most people don't know what to do with old, out-dated computers, television sets, cell phones and other electronics.

Our bet is most people simply toss them into the garbage can. Others take their old TV's out on some old county road and simply toss them out.

First off, it is technically illegal to put old electronics in your garbage can. Will the electronic police ever question you, we doubt it.

The reason they don't need to end up in a landfill is that electronics contain hazardous materials, whether it's batteries or other components. If they end up in landfills, at some point down the road those hazardous materials will end up in the ground water that you and we drink.

The Escambia County (Ala.) Commission, in cooperation with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office will be holding a free electronic recycling program beginning today to allow all residents to get get rid of those electronics in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.

From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Friday, April 27, and Saturday, April 28, you can get rid of old electronics at the Atmore Farmer's Market across from city hall; at the Flomaton Fire Station; and at the Brewton Square Shopping center near Subway.

If you have multiple items, there will be inmates from he sheriff's office there to help you unload.

Don't let this opportunity pass you by. We all have old computer stuff that needs to be disposed of.

Do it right and get rid of it in a legal manner. We applaud the commission and the sheriff's office for making the opportunity available to the public. Take advantage of it.
