Flomaton votes to add cop to school

Council to coordinate with school and school board

Flomaton schools may soon see an additional resource officer placed on campus following a vote Monday night by the Flomaton Town Council.

Councilman Jim Johnson said he’d like to see the town place the additional officer in the schools for the remainder of the school year.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office currently provides a resource officer for the county schools in Atmore, East Brewton and Flomaton with the school board paying two-thirds of the expense and the county paying one-third.

Johnson noted that during a recent issue at Escambia County High School in Atmore, the resource officer assigned to Flomaton went to Atmore to help.

Councilwoman Lillian Dean questioned whether or not the council could vote to put an officer in the schools since they were part of the county school system.

Town Attorney Chuck Brooks said county school board would have to approve the plan first.

Johnson suggested they to go ahead and get with Police Chief Bryan Davis and begin advertising for the position.

“I’d like to see another officer on campus,” Johnson said.

“The worst thing we can do is nothing,” said Councilman Buster Crapps. “We can’t put a price on safety.”

Johns said any decision needed to be made by Chief Davis.

The council then voted unanimously to place another officer at the schools.
