Police had the right approach

We applaud the Flomaton Police Department and the Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff's Office for their efforts at Flomaton schools this week in the wake of some alleged threats made over social media.

Police Chief Bryan Davis received information late Monday afternoon that threats had been made on social media. According to Davis, his office scoured through Facebook and other social media sites and found no direct threats to the Flomaton schools.

But in the aftermath of the recent shooting in Parkland, Fla., the police department and sheriff's office made the right call to simply increase its presence at the school.

From what we can tell, there was no direct threat made on social media concerning the Flomaton schools. The police department could have easily said there was no threat and went about its business.

But instead they directed officers to the school Tuesday, they were there Wednesday and will likely be there until the end of the week.

It appears the added appearance of law enforcement on the Flomaton campus made some parents nervous. You ought to be proud that even a hint of trouble at the schools prompted Chief Davis to step up the presence at the school.

Instead of questioning Chief Davis' motive of the increase of police presence at our schools, we should be applauding him for taking any threat of violence so serious.
