MLK festivities set for Atmore, Brewton

Brewton and Atmore are gearing up for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., celebration and holiday observance that will kickoff in Atmore on Jan. 12. Monday, Jan. 15, is a federal holiday to honor the late civil rights leader.

Atmore

An Atmore Community Day of Service will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Unity House at 313 North Main St. The event is designed to assist families and individuals to get a good hot meal, food, clothes, shoes, household items, linens, furniture, paint and other items at no cost.

Sponsored by the Concerned Citizens of Atmore 'Unity in the Community' and other business organizations, officials are asking if residents know someone in need, steer them toward this event.

From 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13, the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Unity Prayer Breakfast will be held at the Atmore Community Hospital's Mason Auditorium. Cost for the breakfast is $12 per person and tickets can be purchased from any committee member and will be available at the door.

The annual Atmore MLK parade will be held Monday, Jan. 15. Lineup at Houston Avery Park will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the parade set to begin at 10 a.m. Parade entry fee is $10 per unit that includes floats and vehicles. Proceeds from the parade with be used to serve community needs. All floats entered in the parade will be judged prior to the parade with first and second place trophies presented.

Parade applications are available at the Unity House in the mailbox. All applications must have a copy of insurance attached. Applications for the parade must be turned in by Friday, Jan. 12, before 7 p.m.

Brewton

The Brewton precinct of the Alabama Democratic Conference will kick off its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., festivities with a parade on Saturday, Jan. 13 to start at 12 noon. This year's theme is 'Don't Forget the Dream'.

Line up will be at the city of Brewton's maintenance department on McLellan Street, leading out onto Sowell Road. The Parade will end at the John L. Fisher Community Center.

Vendors will be set up at the community center with an entry fee of $25. Registration forms can be obtained by calling Joe Watson at 809-5423.

On Sunday, Jan. 14, a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Celebration Service will begin at 4 p.m. at Second Saint Siloam Missionary Baptist Church. The speaker will be Bishop Robert McWilliams of New Life Holiness Church, located on Ridge Road in Brewton.

Watson said the ADC is asking members of the community and surrounding areas to come help celebrate the historical occasion.
