Royals take first win with 39-6 victory

Jay scored quick and fast in the first half Friday night to take a 32-0 half time lead over the visitors from Wewachitchka to give the Royals their first win of the season with a 39-6 victory.

"I thought we played a pretty complete game," said Jay head football coach Melvin Kersey. "We ran the ball effectively so we really didn't need to open the passing game, but we still threw for 125 yards and Conner Moye threw three touchdown passes."

Moye only attempted seven passes and hit on five for 125 yards.

Jay will travel to Escambia Academy this Friday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

As Jay looks toward the end of the season, the Royals will be busy toward the end of October. Jay's Sept. 8 home game against Rocky Bayou was canceled due to Hurricane Irma. Jay will host Rocky Bayou on Monday, Oct. 30 in a 6 p.m. kickoff. The game follows Jay's Friday, Oct. 27 trip to Freeport and will be ahead of Jay's Nov. 3 trip to Lighthouse Christian.

"It's not the greatest of situations but we didn't want to lose a home game," Kersey said. "It will be a quick turnaround, but I think our kids are really looking forward to it.

Friday night Devin Lambeth opened the Jay scoring on a 75-yard kickoff for a touchdown on the game's first play. Moye later hit Eric Godfrey on an 8-yard touchdown pass and Jay took a 12-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Moye opened the third quarter with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Reid Kelley. Moye followed with a 4-yard touchdown run and James Eddings rounded out the first half scoring on a 55-yard pass from Moye to give Jay the 32-0 lead at intermission.

Eddings scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter and the successful PAT gave the Royals at 39-0 lead.

The Gators added their lone score in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard run to make the final score 39-6.

"Defensively we were able to shut them down," Kersey said. "We also forced a couple of fumbles and they were never able to recover from them."

Kersey also praised his special teams for their effort.

"We ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown and blocked a punt early in the game," he said. "We played well in all phases of the game."
