  • A lot of 'stupid is as stupid does'

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Dec 21, 2017

I loved the movie Forrest Gump, I had read the book, but I always wondered what that line 'Mama always said stupid is as stupid does' really meant. In the aftermath of this special senate race between Roy Moore and Doug Jones, I think I've learned what Forrest was really talking about. Here we are well over a week after the voters of Alabama voted to send Democrat Doug Jones to Washington to represent us and Republican Roy Moore has yet to concede. Stupid No. 1 on Moore. He was holding out on...

  • Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus

    Staff Report|Dec 21, 2017

Editor’s note: Christmas is a time to reflect on all the hopes and fears around the world. Years ago an 8-year-old girl named Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of the New York Sun newspaper saying her friends had told her there was no Santa Claus. The response, written by Francis P. Church and appearing on the Sun’s editorial page on Sept. 21, 1897, remains as appropriate today as it did those many years ago. In wishing you a Merry Christmas, The Tri-City Ledger shares this memorable letter with you. ***** We take pleasure in an...

  • Live in hope this Christmas

    Bradley Byrne|Dec 21, 2017

It’s that time of the year again. It’s the time we hurry from store to store looking for that perfect gift for our loved ones. It’s the time when many travel around the country to spend time with their families. It’s the time where we dust off the cookbooks to prepare the perfect dish for the Christmas lunch or dinner. If you are like me, Christmas is a time when you can feel overwhelmed. There is so much to do and so little time to get everything done. Between balancing work, family, and the holidays, it seems like there is not enough time in...

  • Exciting year in Alabama politics

    Steve Flowers, Guest Columnist|Dec 21, 2017

Well, folks, we have had a more exciting and fun filled political year than we expected. Usually, most of the fun is reserved for even numbered years when presidential or gubernatorial elections are held. However, it’s been a good ride. Obviously, the Special Election for the remaining three years of Jeff Sessions’ senate term monopolized the year. Although you will have to remember, that election was preceded by two events that set up the senate race. Donald Trump selected Jeff Sessions to be Attorney General. Sessions had been our junior sen...

  • Diluting conservatism and Christmas as well

    Pete Riehm, Guest Columnist|Dec 21, 2017

Elections and holidays are never a good mix. After the shock a Democrat won a US Senate seat in deep red Alabama in a bitter and bruising series of special elections, folks are looking for fault. Not solid Republican, but most Alabamians are conservative. If any “conservative” leaning Democrats exist anymore, they would be in Alabama. So how did a very liberal Democrat win? The short answer is while Republicans were busy infighting spilling each other’s blood, Democrats exploited it with an incredible get out the vote ground game. Spend...

  • More on Wawbeek and Sardis Church

    Kevin McKinley, Guest Columnist|Dec 21, 2017

In the early days after the War Between the States religion became a source of comfort and peace for a generation which had grown tired of war and destruction. Local Baptist evangelists rapidly spread the Gospel throughout the region. James Lazarus Bryars was an early Baptist missionary who walked from community to community founding churches and preaching at turpentine stills and lumber camps. Among the many churches Bryars helped to found was Sardis Baptist Church in July 1865. Burgess Miles...

  • Reflecting on memories Marby Dozier

    Dec 21, 2017

The holiday season gives us an opportunity to reflect on the best qualities of our fellow men, both through the sparkle of our children’s eyes as they look to an exciting future and to the memories of those now past who did a little good in their lifetimes. The name of one such good man from our past seems to return to my mind on occasion, Mabry Dozier. Mabry came to Century shortly after graduating college where he began work at the saw mill. He soon married into a local family and over the years his company position progressed until he was a...
