  • Let facts, not social media decide fate

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|May 10, 2018

While a picture of the valedictorian, salutatorian and Top 10 walking across the stage at W.S. Neal High School on graduation night would be great, I'm more hoping to take the picture of those responsible for changing grades being paraded out in handcuffs. As news started breaking last week that some grades had been changed at W.S. Neal that put a halt to naming the valedictorian and salutatorian and the Top 10 there have been a lot of rumors floating around on social media. To be perfectly...

  • Holmes gets quick fix for parking issue

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|May 10, 2018

We applaud Flomaton Elementary School Principal Diane Holmes for at least temporarily solving the parking issue behind the school. Last week we showed you cars packed in there tight as sardines, by Thursday afternoon cones and tape had been placed to restrict parking next to the elementary school. Our issue was a safety issue. We felt there was no way a fire truck could get to the elementary school the way the cars were parked. As we stated, the best case scenario would be some teachers' cars...

  • Fighting childhood cancer

    Congressman Bradley Byrne, Guest Columnist|May 10, 2018

As a father of four, it is difficult to even contemplate a child’s life being cut short due to cancer or another terminal illness. As Danny Thomas, the founder of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, once stated, “no child should die in the dawn of life.” This powerful statement rang true recently when I met the mother of William the Warrior. Just one month ago, three-year-old William Marion lost his battle after being diagnosed with a rare form of sarcoma. His mother, Jessica Marion, recently visited my office in Washington to share the sto...

  • Primaries are quickly approaching

    Steve Flowers, Guest Columnist|May 10, 2018

We are less than four weeks away from our June 5th primary. Those of us who follow Alabama politics have pointed to this year as being a very entertaining and interesting gubernatorial year. However, last year’s resignation by former Governor, Robert Bentley and the ascension of Kay Ivey from Lt. Governor to the Governor’s office has put a damper on the excitement we anticipated in the governor’s race. Kay took over the reins of state government and her appearance as a seasoned veteran of state politics seems to resonate with voters. Polli...

  • Two Waffle House tales of disorder and heroism

    Pete Riehm, Guest Columnist|May 10, 2018

Sunday April 22nd 2018 was a tragically unlucky day for Waffle House, its employees and patrons. In a horrific senseless attack, a naked madman shot up a Tennessee Waffle House killing four and wounding four others. On the same day, an unruly trio entered an Alabama Waffle House in the early hours with a presumed alcoholic beverage and then created a disturbance when asked to leave. The ensuing altercation with police recorded on video went viral precipitating a social media firestorm. Both incidents were nonsensical, but one was significant...
